Wed 05 Apr 23 - Streaky Bay
20 to 26 Deg, Overcast with a light NE Wind in the morning, increasing to 40km/hr winds throughout the day, then becoming light again in the evening. Before breakfast I went for a 28km ride through town and around the bay to the boat ramp and back, feeling every bit of the increasing headwind on the way back. Breakfast on return, then at 1000, Noel and I climbed into the back of Dale and Caroline car for a drive around the 38km long Cape Bauer coastal scenic drive. The scenery was rugged and spectacular stopping at Cape Bauer and the Whistling Rocks and Blowhole (no whistling today - wrong conditions but a lot of noise from air being pushed through the blowholes). The colours in the sand dunes were also stunning. From Cape Bauer we returned to Streaky Bay stopping at the Bakery for a bite to eat, then we drove 22km west of Streaky Bay to check out Perlubie Beach. The wind was getting quite strong by now, and although the beach was reasonably well protected, it was still very noticeable on the beach. It was high tide with a lot of seaweed, and there was little room to manoeuvre between the high tide mark and the sand dunes. I can't imagine how much sand would end up in the van and none of us could see why everyone gets excited about camping here. We returned to the van for coffee and a few chores, then Noel and I drove in to town to refuel ($245 hurt)...then we returned to prepare for our departure tomorrow. At 1700, we walked around to say goodbye to Dale and Caroline who are moving on to another destination tomorrow. This is our last day on the SA coast for this trip and tomorrow we head inland. We are aiming for Wudinna Showgrounds, but with no bookings we are uncertain though if that is where we will end up given the large number of caravaners on the move and Easter weekend upon us. We were aiming for Kimba, but gave up on that idea due to reviews about how busy it is from Kimba through to the Flinders Ranges at the moment. Stay tuned.

Perlubie Beach - Personally I can't see what all the interest is about camping here.
