Day 2: Tue 14 Feb 23 - Chiltern to Benalla

Tue 14 Feb - Chiltern to Benalla (Towed 78km)

12 Deg overnight reaching a beautiful sunny 29 Deg in Benalla. The hum of traffic along the Hume Highway overnight was not too loud to keep us awake, but it was noticeable. I hadn’t realised how close to the Highway Chiltern is. The two trains sounding their horns when passing through town early this morning were very noticeable... I thought they were actually passing through the caravan park. Nevertheless, we slept well on our first night away. After a slow start to the day (and a subtle reminder that it was Valentine’s Day), I went for another walk around town and the lake.
With only a very short distance to drive today, we packed up and got underway by 0930, stopping shortly after at Glenrowan for our morning coffee at the bakery. The coffee was quite nice but there wasn't much to see in town, apart from lots of Ned Kelly statues and memorabilia. We continued on our way to Benalla arriving at the caravan park for a 2 night stay shortly after 1130. We had considered staying at the show grounds which is for self-contained vans only (no power or water), but we decided a couple more nights at a powered site was needed to get the fridge/freezer fully cooled (it hadn't cooled sufficiently since we collected the van in Albury). Our stay in Benalla as at the Tourist Park, which is very neat and tidy, but also very compact. After setting up, and a long chat with our new neighbours, we headed into town for a stroll. Benalla is much bigger that I expected and we found an amazing display of street art around town. Tomorrow we plan to drive a 125km painted silo art trail ending at the Winton Wetlands where we will meet up with an old Canberra neighbour for lunch. A refreshing dip in the pool and a refreshing ale ended a very relaxing day.

Warning: Lots of photos...
